2. O obreiro da última hora
tem direito ao salário, mas é preciso que a sua boa vontade o haja
conservado à disposição daquele que o tinha de empregar e que o seu
retardamento não seja fruto da preguiça ou da má vontade. Tem ele
direito ao salário, porque desde a alvorada esperava com impaciência
aquele que por fim o chamaria para o trabalho. Laborioso, apenas lhe
faltava o labor.
Se, porém, se houvesse negado ao trabalho a qualquer hora do dia; se houvesse dito: “tenhamos paciência, o repouso me é agradável; quando soar a última hora é que será tempo de pensar no salário do dia; que necessidade tenho de me incomodar por um patrão a quem não conheço e não estimo! quanto mais tarde, melhor”; esse tal, meus amigos, não teria tido o salário do obreiro, mas o da preguiça.
Que dizer, então, daquele que, em vez de apenas se conservar inativo, haja empregado as horas destinadas ao labor do dia em praticar atos culposos; que haja blasfemado de Deus, derramado o sangue de seus irmãos, lançado a perturbação nas famílias, arruinado os que nele confiaram, abusado da inocência, que, enfim, se haja cevado em todas as ignomínias da humanidade? Que será desse? Bastar-lhe-á dizer à última hora: Senhor, empreguei mal o meu tempo; toma-me até ao fim do dia, para que eu execute um pouco, embora bem pouco, da minha tarefa, e dá-me o salário do trabalhador de boa vontade? Não, não; o Senhor lhe dirá: “Não tenho presentemente trabalho para te dar; malbarataste o teu tempo; esqueceste o que havias aprendido; já não sabes trabalhar na minha vinha. Recomeça, portanto, a aprender e, quando te achares mais bem-disposto, vem ter comigo e eu te franquearei o meu vasto campo, onde poderás trabalhar a qualquer hora do dia.
Bons espíritas, meus bem-amados, sois todos obreiros da última hora. Bem orgulhoso seria aquele que dissesse: "Comecei o trabalho ao alvorecer do dia e só o terminarei ao anoitecer." Todos viestes quando fostes chamados, um pouco mais cedo, um pouco mais tarde, para a encarnação cujos grilhões arrastais; mas há quantos séculos e séculos o Senhor vos chamava para a sua vinha, sem que quisésseis penetrar nela! Eis-vos no momento de embolsar o salário; empregai bem a hora que vos resta e não esqueçais nunca que a vossa existência, por longa que vos pareça, mais não é do que um instante fugitivo na imensidade dos tempos que formam para vós a eternidade.

3. Jesus gostava da
simplicidade dos símbolos e, na sua linguagem máscula, os obreiros que
chegaram na primeira hora são os profetas, Moisés e todos os iniciadores
que marcaram as etapas do progresso, as quais continuaram a ser
assinaladas através dos séculos pelos apóstolos, pelos mártires, pelos pais da Igreja, pelos sábios, pelos filósofos e, finalmente, pelos
espíritas. Estes, que por último vieram, foram anunciados e preditos
desde a aurora do advento do Messias e receberão a mesma recompensa. Que
digo? recompensa maior. Últimos chegados, eles aproveitam dos labores
intelectuais dos seus predecessores, porque o homem tem de herdar do
homem e porque coletivos são os trabalhos humanos: Deus abençoa a
solidariedade. Aliás, muitos dentre aqueles revivem hoje, ou reviverão
amanhã, para terminarem a obra que começaram outrora. Mais de um
patriarca, mais de um profeta, mais de um discípulo do Cristo, mais de
um propagador da fé cristã se encontram no meio deles, porém, mais
esclarecidos, mais adiantados, trabalhando, não já na base e sim na
cumeeira do edifício. Receberão, pois, salário proporcionado ao valor da
obra.
O belo dogma da reencarnação eterniza e precisa a filiação espiritual. Chamado a prestar contas do seu mandato terreno, o Espírito se apercebe da continuidade da tarefa interrompida, mas sempre retomada. Ele vê, sente que apanhou, de passagem, o pensamento dos que o precederam. Entra de novo na liça, amadurecido pela experiência, para avançar mais. E todos, trabalhadores da primeira e da última hora, com os olhos bem abertos sobre a profunda justiça de Deus, não mais murmuram: adoram.
Tal um dos verdadeiros sentidos desta parábola, que encerra, como todas as de que Jesus se utilizou falando ao povo, o gérmen do futuro e também, sob todas as formas, sob todas as imagens, a revelação da magnífica unidade que harmoniza todas as coisas no universo, da solidariedade que liga todos os seres presentes ao passado e ao futuro.

escutais já o ruído da tempestade que há de arrebatar o velho mundo e
abismar no nada o conjunto das iniquidades terrenas? Ah! bendizei o
Senhor, vós que haveis posto a vossa fé na sua soberana justiça e que,
novos apóstolos da crença revelada pelas proféticas vozes superiores,
ides pregar o novo dogma da
reencarnação e da elevação dos Espíritos, conforme tenham cumprido, bem ou mal, suas missões e suportado suas provas terrestres.
Não mais vos assusteis! As línguas de fogo estão sobre as vossas cabeças. Ó verdadeiros adeptos do Espiritismo!. . . sois os escolhidos de Deus! Ide e pregai a palavra divina. É chegada a hora em que deveis sacrificar à sua propagação os vossos hábitos, os vossos trabalhos, as vossas ocupações fúteis. Ide e pregai. Convosco estão os Espíritos elevados. Certamente falareis a criaturas que não quererão escutar a voz de Deus, porque essa voz as exorta incessantemente à abnegação. Pregareis o desinteresse aos avaros, a abstinência aos dissolutos, a mansidão aos tiranos domésticos, como aos déspotas! Palavras perdidas, eu o sei; mas não importa. Faz-se mister regueis com os vossos suores o terreno onde tendes de semear, porquanto ele não frutificará e não produzirá senão sob os reiterados golpes da enxada e da charrua evangélicas. Ide e pregai!
Ó todos vós, homens de boa-fé, conscientes da vossa inferioridade em face dos mundos disseminados pelo Infinito!. . . lançai-vos em cruzada contra a injustiça e a iniquidade. Ide e proscrevei esse culto do bezerro de ouro, que cada dia mais se alastra. Ide, Deus vos guia! Homens simples e ignorantes, vossas línguas se soltarão e falareis como nenhum orador fala. Ide e pregai, que as populações atentas recolherão ditosas as vossas palavras de consolação, de fraternidade, de esperança e de paz.
Que importam as emboscadas que vos armem pelo caminho! Somente lobos caem em armadilhas para lobos, porquanto o pastor saberá defender suas ovelhas das fogueiras imoladoras.
Ide, homens, que, grandes diante de Deus, mais ditosos do que Tomé, credes sem fazerdes questão de ver e aceitais os fatos da mediunidade, mesmo quando não tenhais conseguido obtê-los por vós mesmos; ide, o Espírito de Deus vos conduz.
Marcha, pois, avante, falange imponente pela tua fé! Diante de ti os grandes batalhões dos incrédulos se dissiparão, como a bruma da manhã aos primeiros raios do Sol nascente.
A fé é a virtude que desloca montanhas, disse Jesus. Todavia, mais pesados do que as maiores montanhas, jazem depositados nos corações dos homens a impureza e todos os vícios que derivam da impureza. Parti, então, cheios de coragem, para removerdes essa montanha de iniquidades que as futuras gerações só deverão conhecer como lenda, do mesmo modo que vós, que só muito imperfeitamente conheceis os tempos que antecederam a civilização pagã.
Sim, em todos os pontos do Globo vão produzir-se as subversões morais e filosóficas; aproxima-se a hora em que a luz divina se espargirá sobre os dois mundos.
Ide, pois, e levai a palavra divina: aos grandes que a desprezarão, aos eruditos que exigirão provas, aos pequenos e simples que a aceitarão; porque, principalmente entre os mártires do trabalho, desta provação terrena, encontrareis fervor e fé. Ide; estes receberão, com hinos de gratidão e louvores a Deus, a santa consolação que lhes levareis, e baixarão a fronte, rendendo-lhe graças pelas aflições que a Terra lhes destina.
Arme-se a vossa falange de decisão e coragem! Mãos à obra! o arado está pronto; a terra espera; arai!
Ide e agradecei a Deus a gloriosa tarefa que ele vos confiou; mas, atenção! entre os chamados para o Espiritismo muitos se transviaram; reparai, pois, vosso caminho e segui a verdade.
Pergunta. — Se, entre os chamados para o Espiritismo, muitos se transviaram, quais os sinais pelos quais reconheceremos os que se acham no bom caminho?
Resposta. — Reconhecê-los-eis pelos princípios da verdadeira caridade que eles ensinarão e praticarão. Reconhecê-los-eis pelo número de aflitos a que levem consolo; reconhecê-los-eis pelo seu amor ao próximo, pela sua abnegação, pelo seu desinteresse pessoal; reconhecê-los-eis, finalmente, pelo triunfo de seus princípios, porque Deus quer o triunfo de sua lei; os que seguem sua lei, esses são os escolhidos e ele lhes dará a vitória; mas ele destruirá aqueles que falseiam o espírito dessa lei e fazem dela degrau para contentar sua vaidade e sua ambição.

Aproxima-se o tempo em que se cumprirão as coisas anunciadas para a
transformação da humanidade. Ditosos serão os que houverem trabalhado no
campo do Senhor, com desinteresse e sem outro móvel, senão a caridade!
Seus dias de trabalho serão pagos pelo cêntuplo do que tiverem esperado.
Ditosos os que hajam dito a seus irmãos: “Trabalhemos juntos e unamos
os nossos esforços, a fim de que o Senhor, ao chegar, encontre acabada a
obra”, porquanto o Senhor lhes dirá: “Vinde a mim, vós que sois bons
servidores, vós que soubestes impor silêncio aos vossos ciúmes e às
vossas discórdias, a fim de que daí não viesse dano para a obra!” Mas,
ai daqueles que, por efeito das suas dissensões, houverem retardado a
hora da colheita, pois a tempestade virá e eles serão levados no
turbilhão! Clamarão: “Graça! graça!” O Senhor, porém, lhes dirá: “Como
implorais graças, vós que não tivestes piedade dos vossos irmãos e que
vos negastes a estender-lhes as mãos, que esmagastes o fraco, em vez de o
amparardes? Como suplicais graças, vós que buscastes a vossa recompensa
nos gozos da Terra e na satisfação do vosso orgulho? Já recebestes a
vossa recompensa, tal qual a quisestes. Nada mais vos cabe pedir; as
recompensas celestes são para os que não tenham buscado as recompensas
da Terra.”
Deus procede, neste momento, ao censo dos seus servidores fiéis e já marcou com o dedo aqueles cujo devotamento é apenas aparente, a fim de que não usurpem o salário dos servidores animosos, pois aos que não recuarem diante de suas tarefas é que ele vai confiar os postos mais difíceis na grande obra da regeneração pelo Espiritismo. Cumprir-se-ão estas palavras: “Os primeiros serão os últimos e os últimos serão os primeiros no reino dos céus.”
Deus procede, neste momento, ao censo dos seus servidores fiéis e já marcou com o dedo aqueles cujo devotamento é apenas aparente, a fim de que não usurpem o salário dos servidores animosos, pois aos que não recuarem diante de suas tarefas é que ele vai confiar os postos mais difíceis na grande obra da regeneração pelo Espiritismo. Cumprir-se-ão estas palavras: “Os primeiros serão os últimos e os últimos serão os primeiros no reino dos céus.”

The worker of the last hour has a right to his wages; nevertheless, it is important that his lateness be not due to either laziness or reluctance, but to the fact that, although willing to work, he had been patiently waiting for someone to employ him. He has a right to his wages because, being hardworking, he has waited anxiously since dawn for someone who would finally offer work. It was only that he lacked opportunity.
However, if he had refused to work at any time during the day, or if he had said: "Wait a while, rest is very agreeable to me; when the last hour sounds then I will think about the day's wages; what necessity have I to be bothered by an employer I have no regard for and don't even know? The later the better!" Then this person, my friends, would not have received the wages of work but of laziness.
What would you say then of someone who, instead of remaining inactive, utilized those hours destined for the day's labour to practice culpable acts; who blasphemed against God, spilt the blood of his brothers, launched perturbation amongst families, ruined those who trusted in him by abusing their innocence; who, in short, satiated himself with all the ignominies of human nature? What would become of him? Is it enough for him to say at the last hour: "Master, I used my time badly. Take me on till the end of the day so l do some work, although it will be very little of what was my share, and give me the wages of a good worker"? No! No! The Lord will say to him: "I have no work for you at present. You squandered away your time; you forgot what you had learnt; you can no longer work in my vineyard. Consequently, you must recommence your learning, and when you are better disposed come again to me and I will throw open my vast fields to you, where you may work at any time."
Good Spiritists, my dearly beloved, you are all workers of the last hour. The one who says: “I began work at dawn and will only finish at nightfall," is very conceited. All of you came when you were called, some a little earlier, some a little later, to this incarnation whose shackles you now carry. For how many centuries has the Lord called you to His vineyard without you wishing to enter it? Here is the moment to pocket your wages, so put to good use the time that is left and never forget that your existence, however long it may appear to be, is nothing but a fleeting moment in the immensity of time which forms eternity. - CONSTANTINE, a Protecting Spirit (Bordeaux, 1863).

Jesus liked the simplicity of symbols and in His virile language the workers who arrived at the first hour were the prophets, Moses and all the initiates, who have marked the steps of progress which continued to be signposted throughout the ages by the apostles, the martyrs, the founders of the Church, the wise men, the philosophers and finally by the Spiritists. These, who are the last to come, were announced and prophesied from the dawn of the advent of the Messiah and they will receive the same recompense or, I should say, a larger recompense. Being the last to arrive, the Spiritists take advantage of all the intellectual labours of their predecessors, because Man must inherit from Man and because human work and the subsequent results are collective: God blesses solidarity. Moreover, many who relive today, or who will relive tomorrow, are terminating work begun previously. More than one patriarch, more than one prophet, more than one disciple of Christ is to be found amongst these; nevertheless, more enlightened, more advanced, working now not at the base but at the summit of the edifice. These then will receive wages according to the value of the undertaking.
The beautiful doctrine of reincarnation is perpetual and needs spiritual affiliation. A Spirit, when called upon to give an account of its earthly mandate, sees for itself the continuity of an interrupted task, which is always resumed. It sees, it feels, it intuitively grasps the thoughts of those who have preceded. It begins the lesson anew, matured by experience, to advance yet further. 5. The time approaches when those things which have been announced for the transformation of humanity will be accomplished. All those who have worked in the field of the Lord with disinterestedness and no other motive than charity, will be blessed! Their working days will be paid a hundred times more than was expected. Blessed are those who have said to their fellow men: "Let us work together and unite our efforts so that when the Lord arrives He will find His work finished," seeing that the Lord will say to them: "Come unto me, you who have been good servants, you who knew how to silence your rivalries and discords so that no harm should come to the work!" But woe to those who as a result of their dissensions have held back the time of the harvest, because the tempest will come and they will be taken away in the turbulence! They will cry out: "Mercy! Mercy!" However, the Lord will say to them: "How can you implore mercy when you had none for your fellow men and refused to offer them a helping hand, trampling on the weak instead of upholding them? How can you beseech mercy when you sought your recompense in earthly pleasures and the satisfaction of your pride? You have already received your recompense, just as you wished. There is nothing more to ask for; the celestial rewards are for those who have not looked for earthly compensations."
At this very moment God is preparing a census of His faithful servants, and has already taken note of those whose devotion is only apparent, so that they may not usurp the wages of the courageous servants, because those who do not draw back from the task are the ones to whom He entrusted the most difficult positions in the great work of regeneration by means of Spiritism.
